Heartless Bastards at Club D’Evil
I made good on my word to go see The Heartless Bastards last night.
They rocked.
They played almost everything on the album plus a bunch new material, all of it good. To be fair though there were a couple of goofs. I think they flubbed the bridge on one of their new songs but I can’t say for sure. Early in the set I think Erika accidentally stepped on her tuner pedal, cutting her guitar off for second or two. The Will Song kicked ass live- the rhythm section really gets to shine on that track. The album sounds like it was mixed to showcase her vocals, which is understandable since she’s got a gift, but the guys should get some props too.
The bassist plays a Rickenbacker so +10pts there. Funny thing since I was trying out a Rick over at Bass Emporium just a couple hours prior. $1400 for friggin bass. It’s a beauty though.
Anyways after the show I talked to Erika for bit. I told her I really liked her music like a hundred times but she seemed genuinely flattered every time I said it. I asked her if she’d met Elijah Wood yet (he was there at DeVille) and she shrugged “no- but somebody did tell me that Frodo was here.” -Obviously cool enough to not care. I congratulated her on joining the ranks of Bob Pollard and Kim Deal on my List of Favorite Musicians From Dayton and she smiled really big. I feel like I’m doing a disservice to her music when I say this but damn. She’s as cute as button.
